Use ATLAS.ti without internet access
I am working on my dissertation or on some other very important work. How do I ensure and reserve a license from my organization, so I don’t end up in a situation where all licenses are in use an hour before I must finish my work?
Key takeaways
- You need an internet connection to download ATLAS.ti and activate your license, and ATLAS.ti Web always requires internet access.
- In ATLAS.ti for Windows and Mac, you can reserve a license seat and continue working offline for a selected period.
Who This Article Is For
This article is for ATLAS.ti users who want to know whether they can work offline when using the software with a shared license.
Using ATLAS.ti offline and reserving the license seat
ATLAS.ti normally requires an internet connection to start the application and verify the license. However, in the Desktop versions (Windows and Mac) you can reserve a license seat using the Offline Availability feature. This keeps the seat assigned to you and allows you to continue working offline for a limited time.
You can reserve one of the organization’s licenses so it is reserved and available only to you for an extended period of time. Please follow the instructions below:
On Windows:
- Open ATLAS.ti.
- Go to File > Options > ATLAS.ti.
- In the License and version information section, locate Offline Availability.
- Select the desired period and click Reserve.

On macOS:
- Open ATLAS.ti.
- Go to ATLAS.ti > License.
- Locate Offline Availability.
- Select the desired period and click Reserve.

If you are using ATLAS.ti Web:
ATLAS.ti Web requires an active internet connection and does not support offline work. However, you can still reserve a license seat so it remains assigned to you and cannot be taken by other users while you are working.
Locate the Reserve option at the bottom-left corner of the page.

When a seat is reserved, the reservation indicator will appear highlighted in light blue. When you hover over it, the system will display the date until which the seat is reserved.

You can click again to remove the reservation at any time. Doing so will release the seat back to the license pool, making it available to other users again.
For the Windows and Mac applications, reserving a seat also allows you to continue working offline during the selected period. Note that offline work is only available in the desktop applications (Windows and Mac). ATLAS.ti Web requires an internet connection.
When to Contact Support
Contact ATLAS.ti Support if:
- The Reserve or Offline Availability option does not appear even though you are using a desktop version that should support it.
- A seat reservation fails or does not remain active after it has been set.
- The reservation indicator shows inconsistent information about the reserved period.
- ATLAS.ti unexpectedly releases a reserved seat while the reservation period should still be active.
If the reservation system behaves in ways that cannot be explained by normal license usage or settings, support can help review the license state and investigate the issue.
