Project export, backup, and transfer

Key takeaways

  • You can create a backup of your project by exporting it as a project bundle.
  • Project bundles allow you to safely store, share, or transfer your project between devices and platforms.
  • To move a project between computers or platforms, you must export (from one device/platform) and import (into another).

Who this article is for

Anyone who wants to back up their ATLAS.ti project, transfer it to another device or user, or move projects between Windows, Mac, and Web versions.

How to back up your project

  • ATLAS.ti Windows

    • Open your project
    • Go to File > Export > Project Bundle
    • Choose a location to save the file
    • Click Save
    • This creates a .atlasti file that contains your project data.

  • ATLAS.ti Mac

    • Open your project
    • Go to Project > Export > Project
    • Choose where to save the file
    • Click Export

  • ATLAS.ti Web

    • Open your project in web.atlasti.com
    • Go to Project Settings
    • Select Export for ATLAS.ti Desktop
    • Download the project bundle

How to transfer your project between computers or platforms

ATLAS.ti Desktop projects are always saved locally so they will not automatically sync across computers and platforms. To move a project to another computer or platform, you must export and import it:

Step 1 – Export the project

Follow the steps above to create a project bundle.

Step 2 – Import the project

  • ATLAS.ti Windows
    • Open ATLAS.ti
    • On welcome screen click "Import Project"

    • Or from inside an existing project, go to File > New > Import Project

    • Select your exported project file
    • Follow the prompts to complete the import

  • ATLAS.ti Mac
    • Open ATLAS.ti
    • On start screen click "Import Project"

    • Or from an existing Project, Go to Project > Import Project

    • Select your project bundle file
    • Complete the import process

  • ATLAS.ti Web

    • Select your project bundle file
    • Complete the import process

Common issues and mistakes

  • I moved my file but cannot open it
    • Make sure you are importing a project bundle file, not just your files.
  • My project is missing on another device
    • Desktop projects are stored locally. You must export and import them to transfer.
  • I did not create a backup before switching devices
    • Without a project bundle, your project cannot be transferred. Always export before moving devices.
  • Compatibility issues between versions
    • Ensure both devices are running a compatible or updated version of ATLAS.ti.
