Project Export, Backup and Transfer
Key takeaways
- Your ATLAS.ti license is not tied to one computer. You can install the software on another device, sign in, and continue working there.
- Your projects are not stored in the license itself. Desktop projects are stored locally on your computer, while ATLAS.ti Web projects are connected to your account and available at web.atlasti.com.
- The most reliable way to back up or move a project is to create a project bundle, which packages the project into a single file for storage, transfer, or sharing.
Who this article is for
This article is for users who want to back up a project, move it to another computer, or share it with someone else.
Projects are not connected to your license
ATLAS.ti licenses are flexible and can be used on different computers. If you change devices, get a new computer, or need to work elsewhere, you can simply install ATLAS.ti on that machine and sign in again. Your license does not remain attached to one specific computer.
Your project data is handled separately from the license. In the desktop versions, projects are stored locally on your computer. In ATLAS.ti Web, projects are tied to your account and can be accessed through web.atlasti.com
For backup and transfer purposes, one of the most convenient options is to create a project bundle. A project bundle contains the project in a single file, which makes it useful for creating backups, moving projects between computers, or sharing them with colleagues.
Below you will find the instructions for exporting projects in ATLAS.ti Web, Windows, and Mac.
- For ATLAS.ti Windows: Open the project and go to File > Export, then select the project bundle option. You can find a video instruction here.

- For ATLAS.ti Mac: Go to Project > Export > Project. For a video instruction click here.

- For ATLAS.ti Web: Go to Project Settings > Export for ATLAS.ti Desktop
