Who this article is for
This article is for ATLAS.ti Windows, Mac, and Web users who want to reverse recent changes or recover from mistakes.
Undo and redo in ATLAS.ti Windows and Mac
ATLAS.ti Desktop includes Undo and Redo functionality in most tools and managers.
Undo
Undo reverses your most recent action.
Examples include:
- deleting a code or a document
- moving or merging objects
- editing content or renaming any entity
- making similar unwanted changes
Keyboard shortcuts:
- Windows: Ctrl + Z

- Mac: Command (⌘) + Z

Redo
Redo restores the last action that was undone.
For example, if you accidentally delete text and then use Undo to restore it, Redo will remove it again.
Keyboard shortcuts:
- Windows: Ctrl + Y
- Mac: Command (⌘) + Shift + Z
You can use Undo and Redo repeatedly to move backward and forward through your recent action history.
Undo in ATLAS.ti Web
ATLAS.ti Web automatically saves changes in real time to support collaboration and access across devices.
After certain actions, such as:
- deleting codes
- deleting documents
- renaming items
- changing code or document group assignments
an Undo button may appear in the upper-right corner of the screen.

Clicking this button reverses the most recent action.
Once the Undo button disappears, the change becomes permanent and cannot be reversed through the interface.
Create backups of your projects
Undo is useful for recent changes, but it should not replace regular backups.
We recommend exporting project backups periodically so you can restore your work if needed.
ATLAS.ti Windows
You can export a project package and save it as a backup on your computer or external storage.
ATLAS.ti Mac
You can export a project package and save it as a backup on your computer or external storage.
ATLAS.ti Web
To create a backup:
- Open Project Settings
- Select Export for ATLAS.ti Desktop
- Save the exported project file
This exported project can later be imported back into ATLAS.ti Web, or directly into ATLAS.ti Desktop (Windows/Mac)
Common issues
- Undo is not working
- Some actions cannot be reversed, particularly after the project has been closed or the undo history has been cleared.
- The Undo button disappeared in ATLAS.ti Web
- Once the Undo option is no longer displayed, the change has already been committed and cannot be reversed through the interface.
- I accidentally deleted important work
- If Undo is no longer available, restore the project from a recent backup if one exists.
